Pourquoi septembre est-il le mois de la rentrée scolaire ?

Si ce "Sacré Charlemagne" et Jules Ferry sont les personnages les plus emblématiques de l'éducation nationale, il faut savoir que les origines de ce concept moderne et immuable des "grandes vacances" remontent au XIIIe Siècle.

Pour faire baisser le taux d'absentéisme des étudiants qui désertaient les universités durant les moissons d'été afin d'aider leurs parents aux champs, le Pape Grégoire IX, également célèbre pour être le père de l'inquisition, ferme les facultés durant cette période. L'agriculture étant alors le principal secteur d'activité en France, avec une population essentiellement paysanne, les "grandes vacances" ont lieu… en été.

Bien plus tard, la période des moissons associées aux vendanges de septembre libéreront les étudiants de début août à fin septembre.

Why is September the «Going back to school month»?

In France we think it is because of Charlemagne, King of France and the very first Patron of Art and Culture, or of Jules Ferry, notable for his government’s establishment of free compulsery secular education in the late 19th century. In fact, the tradition of having our «Grandes Vacances» (summer holidays) during July and August goes back to the 8th century. At the time the students used to play truant during the Summer months in order to help their families at harvest time.

Then Pope Gregory decided to shut the Universities during those two months in order to lower the rate of absentees in universities.

At the time, agriculture was the main source of income in France , with most of the population living and working in the countryside. Therefore, the «Long holidays» were to be ... in  the Summer. Much later, when the harvest time will be happening at the time as the grape harvest, the students will be freed from early August til late September.
